Applicability of polyamide 12 intramedullary locked rods in the stabilization of induced humeral fracture in cockerels (white plymouth rock) - in vivo study Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Cherobini,E.P.; Carvalho,L.L.; Garcia,D.O.; Dias,F.G.G.; Malta,C.A.S.; Facin,A.C.; Mattos-Junior,E.; Magalhães,G.M.; Dias,L.G.G.G..
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of polyamide 12 intramedullary rods in osteotomized humerus in cockerels (White Plymouth Rock) and analyze, by radiography and histopathology, bone consolidation and the formation of bone callus. Ten cockerels were subjected to transverse osteotomy of the right humeral diaphysis followed by the insertion of polyamide 12 locked rods, with two nails in each bone fragment. Radiographies obtained at the immediate pre and post-operative period, and every 7 days for 3 months revealed no perioperatory complications. Radiography revealed a radiopaque bone callus between the 4th and 5th week post-surgery. Histopathology detected an amphophylic material (polyamide 12 rod) in the intramedullary region and the...

Bispectral index in dogs with high intracranial pressure, anesthetized with propofol and submitted to two levels of FiO2 Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Lopes,P.C.F.; Nunes,N.; Dias,L.G.G.G.; Pereira Neto,G.B.; Almeida,R.M.; Souza,A.L.G.; Belmonte,E.A..
The effects of inspired oxygen fractions (FiO2) of 1 and 0.6 on bispectral index (BIS) in dogs with high intracranial pressure, submitted to a continuous rate infusion of propofol were evaluated. Eight dogs were anesthetized on two occasions, receiving, during controlled ventilation, an FiO2 = 1 (G100) or an FiO2 = 0.6 (G60). Propofol was used for induction (10mg.kg-1, IV), followed by a continuous rate infusion (0.6mg.kg-1.minute-1). After 20 minutes, a fiber-optic catheter was implanted on the surface of the right cerebral cortex to monitor the intracranial pressure, the baseline measurements of BIS values, signal quality index, suppression ratio number, electromyogram indicator, end-tidal carbon dioxide partial pressure, mean arterial pressure,...

Clinical, pathological and therapeutic findings on lingual rhabdomyosarcoma in a dog - case report Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Dias,F.G.G.; Santilli,J.; Magalhães,G.M.; Calazans,S.G.; Pereira,L.F.; Mattos Junior,E.; Honsho,C.S.; Alves,C.E.F.; Dias,L.G.G.G..
ABSTRACT The biological behaviour of the tumours vary according to the species in which they occur, its location within the cavity, clinical stage and histopathological nature. Lingual neoplasms are generally uncommon in companion animals. Rhabdomyosarcomas are malignant, solid, aggressive formations with high metastatic potential. The clinical signs are variable and a definitive diagnosis can only be reached through histopathological analysis of biopsy and necropsy specimen. In some cases, immunohistochemical study may be needed to confirm the diagnosis. This paper aims to highlight important points about this uncommon condition in dogs, using a case report of lingual rhabdomyosarcoma, which showed no evidence of metastasis after diagnosis, nor of local...

Laryngeal Rhabdomyosarcoma in a dog: case report Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Dias,F.G.G.; Cintra,P.P.; Calazans,S.G.; Jorge,A.T.; Pereira,L.F.; Dias,L.G.G.G.; Olivio,M.B.; Magalhães,G.M..
ABSTRACT The larynx is part of the upper respiratory tract and is responsible for phonation. It allows air to pass between the pharynx and the trachea, but prevents food from entering the airways. Laryngeal neoplasms, including rhabdomyosarcomas, are uncommon in dogs. However, these tumors can trigger numerous progressive clinical signs related to respiratory difficulty and altered phonation. The diagnosis of laryngeal cancer should be made based on the history and symptoms of the patient, combined with complementary tests. The treatment of choice is surgical excision, combined or not with chemotherapy. In view of the low incidence of laryngeal cancer, the objective of the present work was to describe a case of laryngeal rhabdomyosarcoma detected during...

Partial internal hemipelvectomy as rescue therapy in obstipation in four dogs: case report Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Costa,R.C.; Rossignoli,P.P.; Facin,A.C.; Nazaret,T.L.; Minto,B.W.; Dias,L.G.G.G..
ABSTRACT Multiple pelvic fractures can lead to narrowing of the pelvic canal and loss of life quality. Hemipelvectomy, characterized by removal of bone fragments from the pelvis, is considered a rescue therapy. This report describes the technique of caudal partial hemipelvectomy in four cases of obstipation secondary to traumatic pelvic canal narrowing in four dogs, with promising results. All patients had tenesmus and fecal retention. After the procedure, the patients presented immediate normochezia and support of the ipsilateral limb after 10 to 20 days, showing the feasibility of the technique in small animals, providing clinical improvement without walking alterations.

Torsional comparative biomechanical test of modified tibial-plateau-leveling osteotomy plate and locking plate in canine synthetic tíbias Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Sembenelli,G.; Shimano,A.C.; Wittmaack,M.C.N.; Rocha,T.A.S.S.; Moraes,P.C.; Minto,B.W.; Dias,L.G.G.G..
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to develop a locked tibial-plateau-leveling osteotomy (TPLO) plate and to compare this implant with the conventional bone fixation method using a locked plate to determine bone stabilization against torsion forces. Maximum force, angle at peak torque, and stiffness values were determined. Ten synthetic tibias were used, divided into 2 groups. The results in Group 1 (modified TPLO plate) and Group 2 (locked plate) were assessed using analysis of variance and the means were compared using Tukey’s test at 5% probability. There were significant differences in the angle at peak torque and stiffness. The group Modified TPLO plate had higher mean values of stiffness compared with Group locked plate. Group locked plate...

Two levels of the inspired oxygen fraction in propofol-anesthetized dogs with high intracranial pressure: cardiopulmonary function Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Lopes,P.C. Ferro; Nunes,N.; Belmonte,E.A; Almeida,R. M.; Dias,L.G.G.G.; Pereira Neto,G.B.; Souza,A.L.G..
In the initial stage of traumatic brain injury, the use of 1.0 inspired oxygen fraction (FiO2) is indicated. However, high FiO2 has been correlated with atelectasis. Thus, the effects of FiO2= 1.0 and FiO2= 0.6 on the cardiopulmonary function in propofol-anesthetized dogs with high intracranial pressure (ICP) were evaluated. Eight dogs were anesthetized on two occasions, receiving, during controlled ventilation, an FiO2= 1 (G100) or an FiO2= 0.6 (G60). Propofol was used for induction (10mg.kg-1) followed by a continuous rate infusion (0.6mg.kg-1.minute-1). An increase in the ICP was induced by temporary obliteration of the right jugular vein (OJv) 50 minutes after induction of anesthesia. The measurement was taken twenty minutes after OJv (T0) and then at...
